The Mississauga Festival Choir is once again participating in the Mississauga Marathon events to fundraise. Choristers who register for a race through MFC will have access to a personalized web page that they can email to their friends to help gather donations. Funds raised through this campaign will be used to help fund our Raising Voices program for Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers. This year, we will be doing our online fundraising through our Canada Helps site.
What events can I participate in?
The races available are the full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K. Yes, that means the 2K walk is no longer available, but those of you have been doing the 2K walk could easily move up to the 5K distance. All events will take place on the morning of Sunday April 28, the weekend before our spring concert. The races will start and finish at Celebration Square, by the Square
One mall (except for the full marathon which finishes in Port Credit). It will be nice to have all of us finishing in the same location! (Note that dogs and baby strollers are not allowed on any race course.)
Sunday, April 28, 2024
- 5K Walk or run, starting at 9:30 am
- 10K Walk or run, starting at 10:00 am
- Half Marathon Walk or run, starting at 7:30 am
- Full Marathon Run, starting at 7:30 am
How much does it cost to register?
Registration fees are due when you submit your application. Participants must pay their own registration fee. Because of the change in the fundraising platform this year, we are not able to offer refunds for your registration fees. We greatly appreciate your generosity in paying for your registration! The regular fees increased significantly since last year, which has been true in
general for most race events. The prices are:
5K run/walk $75
10K run/walk $85
Half marathon run $125
Full marathon run $140
(Note that taxes and a processing fee will be added to these amounts at checkout.)
How does it work?
All choristers will have a personal $200 fundraising goal. You will ask, invite and encourage your friends and family to donate and support YOU and Mississauga Festival Choir! Also known as a peer-to-peer fundraiser, all funds are being raised by the members of the cause. The racers will reach out to their networks, friend groups, family members to ask for
small donations which will be collected online. Many small donations have a big impact. Within your networks you need only ask for $5, $10 or $25 dollar donations. Think of it as the donor buying you a coffee, to them it is a small act of kindness to support a friend. It is not a lot to ask and many people will be happy to support something you believe in. But these small donations add up quickly!
How Do I Sign Up?
ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE TO REGISTER ONLINE, at
https://raceroster.com/events/2024/75501/beneva-mississauga-marathon-2024. You will need to set up a (free) account with Race Roster if you haven’t got one yet. Select the distance you want to run/walk and then fill in all the information requested. You do not need to add yourself to a team, unless you and some friends want to set up one on your own. Note
there are some optional purchases under the Products section – including the race T-shirt! The new company producing the marathon has decided to charge an extra $15 for your T-shirt. (So disappointing!) You will need to agree to some waivers, then you will be asked if you want to donate to one of their selected charities (which you should decline since you are fundraising for MFC!), and then they will offer to sell you some refund protection – again, optional. Finally, they
will ask you to pay for your entry with a credit card.
If you are having problems with the registration process, please speak to Barb Kishimoto (in the
Alto2 section) or email her ([email protected]). Barb would also like to
hear from everyone who is participating, so she can keep track of the fundraising.
Creating a personalized Fundraising Page:
All participants must check this step - new this year, because we are using Canada Helps to manage our fundraising.
1. If you do NOT want to track your personal money raised then simple share this link with friends:
https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/mississauga-festival-choir/p2p/mississaugamarathon/
2. If you DO wish to track your personal money raised then you need to create a personal fundraising page on Canadahelps.org. Go to the above link and click the “Join as an Individual” button.
Then follow the prompts to create a personal page. You will be asked to set up a Canada Helps account – just enter your name and address as requested. When it asks for the Page Name, use your own name. Then you can type in your fundraising goal (minimum $200, please), load a photo(optional), and type a little explanation of your fundraising (also optional). Click on Continue and your page is created! It will give you a short URL that you can then copy and share with family and friends.
How do I fundraise?
We are hoping to have each participant raise a minimum of $200 in donations for the choir. You have two methods available:
Option 1. (Easiest for you!) Use the online personalized fundraising page that you’ve set up, or just use the general link given above. You can share the link with all your friends and they can donate online by credit card.
Where to share?
Everywhere! The magic of an online fundraising platform is that you can share
the link to anyone and everyone! You NEVER know who will be interested in your cause.
Instagram: Put the online link as your link in profile and use stories or posts to direct
your friends and followers to the donation page.
Facebook: Using the personal fundraising tool, you can create a custom fundraising
page on Facebook that is easily shareable. Or you can directly post the link on your
timeline.
Email: Send the online link to all your friends and family, to your cousin in England and your uncle in Denver, and while you are at it, send it to your colleagues at work. You could even include a link to our Youtube page to provide an inside look at what we do. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClrU3aaDINTJchdMf_DbovA
Option 2. (More work for you!) Collect donations in person. We accept cash or cheques (payable to Mississauga Festival Choir). You can pick up a pledge sheet from Barb, for donors to fill in their name, address and email. However, to submit the cash donations you will need to sign in to your Canada Helps account, click on the Add Offline Donation button, and then type in the name and address details for your donor (from your pledge sheet), and then submit the cash and pledge sheet to Barb. Much more complicated, so please encourage your friends to donate online.
Any individual who contributes $20 or more will be eligible for a tax receipt.
